To whom it may concern
The Mahurangi Technical Institute is a Private Training Establishment offering a number of courses with the aim of preparing students to enter the workplace with the relevant skills and underpinning knowledge required by various industries.
One of the courses we offer is the 'Certificate in Hospitality and Bar Service'. This course offers candidates a thorough grounding in customer service; beverage knowledge and service; safe work practices and the Sale ofLiquor Act.
We were recently approached by Scott Cordes (editor of Hospitality Magazine) and Luke Nicholas (award winning brew master from The Cock and Bull English Pub, Auckland) who have put together an educational seminar on unusual New Zealand and imported beers which includes a tasting. Scott and Luke wished to pilot their new seminar and suggested using our students as guinea pigs.
The presentation went ahead as planned and exceeded all our expectations. Our students benefited greatly from the in-depth treatment of various beer styles and enjoyed Luke's explanation of the different ingredients and brewing processes. Scott had arranged a general knowledge quiz which was undertaken throughout the seminar, which the students found both challenging and fun, with the winning team being presented with promotional gear from supporting breweries. The seminar was supported by a display of unusual beers and glassware and the students were able to sample a variety of malted barley's, smell real hop pellets and sample a variety of beers.
Scott and Luke's presentation was both educational and enjoyable and proved to be a valid contribution to the students learning experience and an excellent way of consolidating the beer knowledge they had already accumulated. Of particular benefit was their exposure to unusual and out-of-the ordinary beer styles which not only enhanced their own appreciation of beer as an alcoholic beverage.. but also increased their ability to meet the customers needs in a service situati .on by being' able to recommend a variety of different products.
We would like to congratulate Scott & Luke on the concept they have put together and wish them every success in their new venture. We will most certainly be inviting them back in the future to deliver their presentation to our new intakes of students.
Yours faithfully
